Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Jigger or Measuring Cup
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Martini Glass or Coupe Glass
  • Citrus Juicer
  • Vegetable Peeler (for garnish)

Ingredients

  • 3 oz Cranberry Juice 90 ml; use 100% pure cranberry juice for best tartness, or cranberry cocktail for sweeter profile
  • 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice 30 ml; from about 1 medium lime; never use bottled
  • 0.5 oz Fresh Orange Juice 15 ml; freshly squeezed preferred over bottled
  • 0.5 oz Simple Syrup 15 ml; or substitute with honey syrup, agave nectar, or maple syrup for natural sweetness
  • 1 oz Sparkling Water 30 ml; club soda works too; sparkling water has no added minerals, club soda has subtle saltiness
  • 0.5 cup Ice Cubes for shaking
  • 1 twist Orange Peel for garnish
  • 3 Fresh Cranberries optional, for garnish
  • 1 sprig Fresh Mint optional, for aromatic garnish

Instructions

  • Chill your martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes before serving, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink to achieve the perfect frosty presentation.
  • Juice the lime and orange fresh. For 1 medium lime, roll it firmly on the counter before cutting to release maximum juice (you need about 1 oz/30 ml). Squeeze half a small orange for the 0.5 oz/15 ml orange juice.
  • Fill your cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes. Add the cranberry juice (3 oz/90 ml), fresh lime juice (1 oz/30 ml), fresh orange juice (0.5 oz/15 ml), and simple syrup (0.5 oz/15 ml).
  • Seal the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes frosty and cold to the touch. This chills and properly dilutes the mocktail for optimal flavor balance.
  • Remove ice from your chilled glass (if using ice water method). Using a fine mesh strainer, double-strain the mixture into the glass to catch any ice shards or pulp for a silky-smooth finish.
  • Gently top with sparkling water (1 oz/30 ml) by pouring slowly down the side of the glass to preserve carbonation.
  • Express the oils from an orange peel twist over the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a firm twist, then run the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink. Thread fresh cranberries on a cocktail pick and rest across the rim, or tuck a mint sprig alongside the orange twist for an elegant aromatic finish.

Notes

FRESH VS BOTTLED JUICE:
Always use freshly squeezed lime juice—bottled lime has a bitter, artificial flavor that ruins the balance. Fresh orange juice is strongly preferred; if using bottled, choose a premium not-from-concentrate variety. For cranberry, 100% pure juice yields a tart, sophisticated drink; cranberry cocktail juice creates a sweeter, more approachable mocktail.
SWEETENER ALTERNATIVES:
Simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water) is the easiest to mix. Honey syrup (2:1 honey to warm water) adds floral depth. Agave nectar blends smoothly without heating. Maple syrup contributes subtle caramel notes. Start with 0.5 oz and adjust to taste—some prefer 0.75 oz if using tart 100% cranberry juice.
SPARKLING WATER VS CLUB SODA:
Sparkling water is pure carbonated water with a clean, neutral taste. Club soda contains added minerals (sodium bicarbonate, potassium sulfate) giving it a slightly salty, crisp edge that some prefer in cocktails. Both work beautifully; choose based on personal preference.
MAKE-AHEAD:
Pre-mix the cranberry, lime, orange juice, and simple syrup in a sealed jar and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Shake with ice and add sparkling water only when ready to serve to preserve carbonation and freshness. For parties, multiply the base ingredients by guest count, chill, and shake individual servings to order.
SCALING FOR PARTIES:
For 4 servings: 12 oz cranberry, 4 oz lime, 2 oz orange, 2 oz syrup, 4 oz sparkling (add individually). For 8 servings: 24 oz cranberry, 8 oz lime, 4 oz orange, 4 oz syrup, 8 oz sparkling. Always add sparkling water to each glass individually after straining to maintain effervescence.
STORAGE:
Best consumed immediately for peak carbonation and chill. Pre-mixed base (without sparkling water) keeps refrigerated for 24 hours in an airtight container.
TROUBLESHOOTING:
Too tart? Add an extra 0.25 oz simple syrup. Too sweet? Add 0.25 oz more lime juice or a splash of sparkling water. Drink looks cloudy? Use a fine mesh strainer or double-strain through cheesecloth. Lost carbonation? Always add sparkling water last and pour gently down the side of the glass; never shake sparkling water in the shaker.
GARNISH CREATIVITY:
Beyond orange twist: try a lime wheel notched on the rim, sugared cranberries (roll in simple syrup then granulated sugar), a rosemary sprig for herbal aroma, or a thin slice of jalapeño for a spicy cosmopolitan mocktail variation. Rim the glass with white sugar or pink Himalayan salt for textural contrast.
